International Aces is a series of graphic novels capturing the true stories of World War One top-scoring fighter pilots, who came from across the world to fight in skies over war-torn Europe.
Action and history unfold in dramatic, black-and-white graphic style, capturing the mayhem of the dogfights alongside the reality of life on the ground. Based on actual events, these stories are an astonishing read and a fitting tribute to courage, audacity and sacrifice.
Volume 4 highlights the contributions from around the Commonwealth and the USA. These remarkable men travelled across the globe to fight in the lead ridden skies above the Western Front.
- William Billy Bishop born in Ontario, Canada became of the most famous pilots of his day. His outspoken success sometimes drew incredulity from fellow pilots, but his reputation as a deadly foe was never in doubt.
- South Africa s Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor at 5 feet 2 inches had to have his cockpit modified to fit his diminutive frame. Unhindered, undaunted he became a poster-boy for the newly-formed Royal Air Force.
- Robert Little was brave, but with a wife and child, he tried to avoid unnecessary recklessness, until one night, when he and his small Royal Naval Air Service squadron were all that stood between London and the mighty Zeppelins.
- Major Keith Caldwell qualified as a pilot in New Zealand before joining the war. His calm ability to teach and inspire young pilots meant he was an excellent mentor, but his sense of honour was outraged when he witnessed a senior officer displaying unwarranted savagery. * Highly successful racing driver, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker faced surprising prejudice before being allowed to turn his high speed skills to air combat. He had plenty of courage and something to prove, but would do his best to live and fight another day.
- Looking back at this First World War History, it is easy to forget that ordinary people, living 100 years ago, were very similar to ourselves. Young and old, timid and adventurous, growing up at home, or living abroad, they were all swept up in the extreme challenges of a world conflict and, in doing so, they lived extra-ordinary lives.
Written and drawn by Chris Geary, independently published by InkShot.com, these stories have been brought to life in a visually stylish, black-and-white, drama-documentary style.
